From the service center to the world leadership

When translated from Japanese Seiko means “Mechanical Accuracy” and in certain contexts – “Success”. A perfect name for a global enterprise with the annual turnover of 112,4 billion yens (that is more than one billion euros) and six hundreds of employees. It all started 132 years ago from a modest atelier Hattori&Co in the center of Tokio. A young businessman Kintaro Hattori was repairing and reselling measuring time devices that had been brought by overseas merchants. During the next four years Hattori extended the business field beginning the assembly process of wall clocks at first and pocket watches later. In 1913 that is almost at the same time with Europe Hattori’s company launched the first brand wristwatch – Laurel. The watch utilized pure-blooded Japanese movement and represented a classical three-handed watch with a small second counter in a 6 o’clock position. The first copy with a word “Seiko”on a dial by the way has appeared only 11 years later and has been virtually no different from Laurel.

In 1929 Seiko managed to get the title the watch of Japanese National Railways, declaring thus of itself for the whole country. This step largely predetermined the further good fortune of the brand. Having survived the hard war and post-war periods the company managed to keep the accumulated know-hows and, what is the most important, the leadership ambitions. In 1953 the brand produced Japan's first TV advertisement. The table alarm clock Seikosha that helped a rooster to control the time of reveille became the “hero” of a several short commercials. In 1956 «Miracle» came into the world – Marvel watch supplied with a debut automatic caliber. It marked the beginning of a long series of achievements in the struggle for chronometric ideals.

In 1960 the Grand Seiko brand came into existence and later became a legendary one. The creators of the brand ventured a creation of no less than a “perfect” watch. One should admit that they partly coped with the task. The Japanese exactness campaign ended in 1968. As a result in order to prevent the prestige loss of Swiss cabinotiers the “mechanical wristwatches”category was abolished at the Neuchatel Competition. Seiko became the official timer of the 18th Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo and provided 1278 measuring time devices, including a revolutionary for that time quartz chronometer QC-951 supplied with the temperature change protection system (from -10 to +50 degrees Celsius). The year 1968 was marked by company’s top places on The Geneva Observatory competition where the rising sun country’s samples won 4th to 10th places which in fact were the 1st to 7th due to the first three places being quartz participants. However a stitch in time saves nine. And these achievements most likely were not of current importance for Seiko as in earlier times because quartz “god” Quartz Astron absorbed the world breaking the comfortable world of Swiss watchmakers and almost washing out mechanical chronometer as it is. The first Astron series was made of gold and comprised only two hundred copies. It clearly demonstrated accuracy, reliability and unpretentiousness of quartz technology that had made a revolutionary change in the balance of power on the global watch market. It is interesting that Seiko also to some extend suffered from its own innovation. Grand Seiko mechanical line finally lost its consumer appeal and was shelved until the late 1990s. As for today Astron's patent are availably for everyone and are used in the most modern quartz watches.

    Wrist watch Seiko Kinetic

In 1977 the successors of Kintaro Hattori presented a wristwatch powered by solar energy and in 1983 – the one with a built-in TV receiver that was honored with being mentioned in Guinness Book of Records. The next boom on the watch market was around Kinetic technology in 1988 when it replaced exchangeable removable batteries with “eternal”power generator working on hand’s movement. It seemed impossible to create anything more ingenious in its simplicity. However in 1999 the new SpringDrive line with a unique glide-motion of hands that imbibed all the best from the world of mechanics and quartz. Being in fact a purely mechanical watch – but with a radically different type of escapement – it demonstrated a striking accuracy gaining or losing one second.

Another step towards the absolute accuracy was done in 2005 when the first watch with radiocontrol was created. It could be adjusted according to the radio signal of exact time in the USA, Europe and certainly Japan. Lastly, in 2012, the global market saw the return of a legendary name that had once thrilled Western European watchmakers. New Astron GPS Solar utilizes solar batteries and satellite dish and shows not just time – to put it more precisely not one but 39 times according to the number of time zones “put” in the corresponding program.
