From Diamonds to Mechanisms

The glorious story of “the jeweler of kings and the king of jewelers” began in 1847: a young jeweler Louis Francois Cartier headed his teacher Adolf Picard’s workshop, located at the Montorgueil Street, in the Paris center. In the Second Empire period the city turned into a modern metropolis with wide avenues and parks, where seekers for money and glory rushed. Napoleon III, who had proclaimed himself an emperor, preached luxury in every single thing: in gastronomy and traveling, entertaining on a grand scale, and, of course, in jewelry. Members of the Emperor’s family became the first famous Cartier clients, and in a short while they were joined by British and Russian monarchs, along with Indian maharajas, and European and American aristocracy.

Cartier Mystery Clock

The first cartier watches were launched by the end of the century: in 1888 the mark produced the first women wrist watch, and shortly presented a pocket model made of platinum (afterwards one of these pocket watches was bought by a banker J. P. Morgan). The first watches were provided with the famous manufacture movements of that period: Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger-LeCoultre. At the turn of the century, especially in the art deco epoch, so called objets d’art came in fashion (art objects for indoor space decoration). Cartier masters instantly commercialized table clocks from gold, crystal, jewels and ornamental stones (onyx, agate, nephrite). A special chapter of the Cartier watch production is Mystery Clock, invented by Maurice Couillard. In 1912 Model A was launched: hands of “mystery clock” moved all alone, as if they were sailing in the air. The secret was revealed in an easy way: each hand was fixed on a glass transparent disc with a metal saw-edged gear, and the edges of the discs were connected to the clock movement, hidden in the clock base. The brand still can produce the unique copies of this table clock, but only by individual orders.

Cartier House, like no other, experimented with watch case geometry. In the brand’s selection there is a big variety of watchcases: round, square, oval, rectangular, in shape of a barrel or complex broken polygons. Many of these models have their own story and are still produced for the up-to-date Cartier collections. In 1904 Louis Cartier invented a watch for his friend, Brazil pilot Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed to check the time at the plane wheel. Santos, a square with rounded angles, became popular in an instant. In 1906 they launched the first Cartier barrel Cartier Tonneau and an elegant oval Baignoire, in 1912 – new convex form Tortue, and in 1917 – the legendary model Tank (the first watch prototype was presented to the General John Pershing). In the present time, the mark is glorified by the watch Ballon Bleu de Cartier with a distinctive sapphire cabochon on the winder and the most current novelty - Cle de Cartier with an elongated winder designed as a key.

This day Cartier achievements in the watch industry are determined mainly by the talent of a wonderful woman Carole Forestier-Kasapi, who heads Cartier's Movement Creation department. She is in charge for all the movement developments from ID One concepts to complex movements with a minute repeater and tourbillon, additional face for the second time zone and, at the same time, – the difference between the time zones, with “mystery” hands, like the historical table clock had. In 2012, at annual Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève she was awarded as the best watch maker of the year.
